Hey Folks, My name is Tim and I am new here. I have an 86 Ranger with a ton of miles on it. Back in 2002 I bought this thing from my son with this "no power" problem. It has been in storage until about six months ago at which time I cleaned out the fuel tank, replaced both fuel pumps and filter. Also, replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

When I dug this thing out of moth balls, it was not even drivable, in fact the pump on the frame (high pressure) was bad and she would not even start. After performing the above mentioned repairs plus many others like brakes, exhaust, tires, paint job etc, I began driving it around the shop where I work and it ran fine. After a six or seven ten minute rides down back roads I decided to bring the ol' girl home. Well, as soon as I got out on the high way it began loosing power. I pulled over to a station and filled up the tank and added two bottles of Heet. After a few miles it seemed to run fine.

A few days later it started loosing power again. After running a couple of tanks of gas through it the problem would come and go. Now it will start right up and idle fine, has plenty of power for the first few minutes then it starts to loose power again. If I'm on level road and half throttle or less, it will run all day, but if I have to stop and take off again, I have to rev up the motor to keep it from falling on its face. Also, when going up hills or trying to pass another car it stalls out. If I pump the throttle it will pick up speed and try to run.

Last night I replaced the sock filter inside the fuel tank. It had some crap in it (about 50% clogged). I just got back from a test drive and it runs no different. Also, the fuel pump on the frame is pretty loud. Sorry for writing a novel here but in hopes for some suggestions, I didn't want to leave anything out. Any thoughts or ideas appreciated.

Fixed it

Well I guess I needed to write all that out to get my old brain engadged. I forgot that I added an inline filter between the two fuel pumps, hidden up inside the frame rail and painted with undercoating. Anyway, I took the filter out and the truck runs like a champ, well as good as an 86 2.3 with 275,000 milest can run.
