84 v6 swap to 83 w/ 4 cyl???

Hi all, I'm as new as a newbie can be. But I think I may have found just the place I was looking for. I have an 83 ranger w/ 4 cyl. & auto trans. thats been sitting dead (blown engine) for 10 yrs or so. A friend just bought an 84 w/ a v6 (not sure what size) w/ man trans. Mine has a solid, straight (no dents or rust) body. His, well not so much. I told him he could have mine & swap motors if he'd like. So the reason for this story is : Does anyone know if any v6 will bolt up to the same tranny a 4 cyl bolts to? He'd prefer a/t as to man. But can he do it or does he need to get another tranny? Thanks in advance...
