Hi I have a 84 ranger 2.3 I've been working on got it running pretty good, then the coil went out on me it had power up to the coil but none going to the distributer, so assuming it was a bad coil I picked up a new one installed it truck started right up I was letting it warm up about 5 mins. into it running it suddenly died now it is showing the same symptoms again power to coil none to distributer. I'm at my wits end on what could be causing this any help would be much appreciated. also it has new cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and had a new coil. thanks

I believe there is supposed resister inline before the coil( drops the voltage the coil). Without that you will chew up coils pretty quick.

TFI coils were OK to use without ballast resistor or resistor wire.

TFI module and coil share the same 12volt wire, so my guess would be that the splice for that 12volts is going bad, moving the wires around when replacing the coil got temporary connection back for TFI module.

Here is the wiring for TFI module: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/TFI_Diagnostic.shtml

Are you testing the right wire for power on TFI connector?

It should have power if key is on, same as coil's "+" side

The START wire on TFI connector is connected to Clutch switch(manual) or NSS(automatic), this prevents engine from starting in gear, this wire should only have voltage when Starter motor is activated.
This START wire is also connected to the wire on the Starter Relay on the fender, the smaller wire on the "S" post of this relay, this wire activates the starter relay and so starter motor, it only has 12v when key is turned all the way to START and clutch pedal is in or trans is in Park/Neutral

What RonD said plus the TFI Module could be bad. That's a common problem with that type system. Good luck.
