Ok, I did a search of the entire forum and couldn't find any info relating to this problem in a C5. 84 2.8 B2 around 160,000 miles. C5 tans isn't acting right. I bought the truck 2 weeks ago for $400. Needed a little work, but it runs.
Up untill I changed the tranny fluid a couple days ago I didn't have this problem. The pan was coated with the normal dust, NO visible shavings, and I have no idea when the last change had been done, but it had been quite a while from the state of the fluid. But now that I have changed the fluid and filter, It doesn't want to stay in gear (R or D) until it has been warmed up good. When I first start it up and put it in reverse cold it very slowly goes out of gear. I can hear the idle picking up as it is coming out of reverse. Same with Drive. It stays in drive as long as I am driving, but when I come to a stop, it slowly comes out of drive.
The shifts feel like they are on time, I can manually shift from first to drive, and the shifts and are not sloppy at all so I'm fairly certain the modulator valve isn't the problem. From what I have been reading on here about the other trannies with the same problem is that the bands may need to be adjusted. I put some lucas trans treatment in it today to see what that'll do, but I would rather fix the problem than treat the symptoms. Can anyone point me to some good info or illustrations that'll help me out with this?
One other thing. From the day I got it, it feels like it slips a little starting off from a stop hot or cold. I don't know if it's the trans I'm feeling doing this, or if it could be part of the carb problem I'm having, but I thought I would throw it out there.
Also I'm wondering if the filter might have anything to do with it. The filter I took off had a downspout on the bottom to put the intake down deeper into the fluid. The filter I put back on did not have this, but as the filter sits down into the pan quite a bit, and the fluid level is a good inch to inch and a half above where the filter sits, I don't think that makes too much difference.
I really appreciate everyone's help here at TRS. I have gotten a lot of good info that has helped me out a lot. This is only the second ford I have ever owned (I've always been a dodge man), but I think I'm gonna like this old B2 and would like to get it running good again.
Thanks,
Z
