Hello ladies and Gents! I got a summer project that i am starting on soon. To start it off I have an 88 Bronco 2 and a 84 bronco 2 to combine.

- originally ive had an 88 xlt bronco 2 w/ manuel trans. for about 9 months now, ive beaten it, ive worked on it, ive fixed it, so many times to a point that i dont want to mess with it any more, it seems to have cancer.

The Start:
- last week i was driving the back roads of NC and came upon a 84 eddie bauer B2 w/ auto tanny sitting on the side of the road looking for a new home, the body and interior was great, the B2 never hit mud before clean as can be other than road grime. only problem was that it had a thrown rod, picked it up the next day for 2 bills, fair price IMO the whole B2 was there nothing missing.

Heres the pics: Red=84 black=88

Both B2's

The questions for you guys is should i use the auto tranny from the 84 or the manuel from the 88 in the combined, i can drive both. No preference. Im planning on using it in the mud and trails as a hunting rig.

would go with the manual instead of the auto any day.
Manuals are easier to work on and are less prone to break down. And can take more of a beating than the autos that ford came out with, for the B2's that is. Not sure about the other vehicles that ford came out with. But all i have is bad luck with auto transmissions.

Manual for me anyday.:icon_thumby:

Been working on an 84, all I can say is stick with the 88, and the manual trans. Also that 2.8 is a pain to keep in top shape.

The 2.9 is a great engine when it runs right. It'll take a hell of a beating. That being said...... find an explorer w a 4.0 and put it in. The money you spend on a 2.9 will be far greater than just upgrading to a 4.0.

Good luck on the project.

I'd love to find an 84 and do a v-8 swap. Perfect canidate

Ok time for some clarification: my plans are to keep the 88 b2's body since it's in good shape and ready to paint, and swap in my 2.9l and my manuel transmission in place for the 2.8, and also looking at dropping in a 4.0 flywheel to combat the c5's stalling issues.

The hardest part of the swap will be the electrical rewiring since I'm going from carborated to EFI.

I'd like to get a 4.0 but honestly the lack of money turns down that swap.

Has any of you guys done the 4.0 flywheel swap?

And if anyone has tips/ideas throw them this way, Im all open ears.

This part doesn't make sense. You are going to put your 2.9 and MANUAL (manual is something you have to do by hand, "manuel" is a kid chasing chickens and playing with a ball in a cup in Mexico). I get that. But then you start talking about a 4.0 flywheel (which is a part strictly associated with a manual trans) and stalling issues that involve a C5 which is an auto-tragic transmission. That's why I am confused.

A 4.0 flywheel and clutch swap is pretty straightforward. It bolts right in, you just need a 4.0 manual starter and get that wired in.

take alot of pics and good luck

Will do!

My bad I was a little tired posting that... Of course it's not a c5. Duh. It's a fm146. And from now on I'll just call it a standard... Lol

Here a question for you guys who have done this before, I have everything out of the way and ready for the 2.8 to pull out, what engine mounts do I need to remove?
