I am doing my first engine swap to resurrect my 84 ranger with a 2.3 carbed (with what I suspect it has blown rings as it spews oil out the dipstick). I am NOT looking forward to re-hooking up all these vacuum lines (half of which were not even plugged in and plugged with screws, etc) Here in Michigan, there is no emissions crap so I don't need to pass any of that stuff. I just want to know what vacuum lines are truly required and which ones I could essentially delete/plug. I want it to run good and get decent fuel econ but I want to know what lines are truly required, and if they are all required to run good and get the best fuel econ I can (i know i wont get epic fuel econ but I want to do the best I can) and are the emission-related lines really required? And which lines are related to that? If you could keep it stupid as I am new to this vacuum line stuff. Thanks!

There is really only one engine related vacuum that is important and that is for the vacuum advance and retard, goes from distributor to ported vacuum on carb. If you have power brakes you need a line from the booster to manifold vacuum. Can't remember if the heater controls are vacuum operated or not but if they are you will need a line for them also, preferably with a vacuum bottle in line.
