I recently bought a 83 Ranger with 302 v8 conversion already done. The engine needs a rebuild. Is it easier to pull out just motor detached from transmission or both together? The exhaust is early Cougar manifolds. I’m have Tri Ys I’m going to put on.

I always pull engines separately unless I'm doing something t the transmission at the same time. An old mechanic told me once that every bolt you remove is one more you have to reinstall.

I would also do the engine by itself, as the extra length you need to deal with as an attached transmission could cause some serious problems, not to mention the added weight to the back end of the transmission. then also the added lifting height needed to clear the rad and supports. 1 other thing is that when replacing it, it could be easier to align the block to the engine mounting plate/slot bolts.

cheers and have fun doing it.

(pulled a team before on another vehicle (luckily it was being junked) and the set up swung backwards with the trans yoke smashing into the windshield) << food for thought

Yes I really don’t want to deal with transmission. My only concern is being able to access the top transmission bolts. The transmission is a 91 AOD.I’m rebuilding the motor and stripping it down to short block to lift out.Should I install in short block form also?

I did all our automatic transmission before I was "promoted" to service manager in 1982. I still have a 24" Snap On 3/8 extension that I used with a 5/8 flex socket to reach upper bell housing bolts. DON'T buy a cheap extension, it will flex under stress and when the bolt breaks free it'll jump and you'll smash your knuckles.
