83 ranger diesel 5 spd?

Not how do I convert a 4 to a 5 spd... I have the snop manuals for the 83 rangers, revision date is 1983 and it specifies a 4spd and a 5 spd for the diesels...

does anyone have any knowledge of this?
or can anyone help me figure out if this section may be a later section... are we 100% positive it was indeed not an option?
 
I'm not sure which transmission it is, but I believe there is a 5 speed that will work with the diesel but I don't have any experience. Your best bet would be google.
 
I understand that there are a few variation to get a 5 speed onto the 2.2l but according to my documentation there was a 5 speed offered by ford for their diesels in 1983. the 4 speed was specified for the 2.2l, but the manual overdrive 5 speed is specified for "diesel engines only"....
 
Supposedly the TK5 has a variant transmission for the diesel engine, and you must have the TK4D.

to answer my own question. Ford indeed made the 83-84 ranger diesel with a 5 spd. It is a rare option but they do exist in small numbers. The mazda b2200 was more common with the 5 spd but the alignment is not 100% with the ranger and it requires the shifter hole to be cut further back.
 
Sounds about like what I'm running into with my 84 B2, it has a 5 speed in it which was a rare option or something because the starters I am getting aren't working right everything I do to it doesn't work out like it should LOL.

A Colone tranny is nothing like a diesel for rareness. Even the rare as hens teeth 4cyl 4x4 trans is no comparison.

I have been into RBV's for 13 years, I THINK I saw a diesel Ranger once. It sounded like a diesel as it drove away. Usually that is a trick only Chrysler minivans can fake...

I'm sure its not, and its geared different as well. A diesel ranger, or just someone with a terrible exhaust system and poorly running engine LOL.

You know if it was a true diesel by the fact that it was headed in the other direction but seemed to take forever to drive away.
I've got 8k miles on mine. Unfortunately the valves were not adjusted properly and it ate a valve. I got another 2.2l out of a ranger from SC and just finished the swap on tuesday. 34mpg is a fantastic feeling, never mind the people who look at you at stop lights, fuel stations etc.
Come on up to maine and you can check the 2.2l 83 ranger test drive off your bucket list.

My 82 Mazda diesel has a 5 speed as do both of my 86 diesel Rangers. I find these tucks have plenty of power. I have been hauling firewood and can get 3/4 cord on my Mazda.

What kind of fuel economy do you get? I'd love to get a hold of a little diesel pickup, but haven't had any luck finding any that are worth buying.
 
I get 32 mpg in the 86 2 wd turbo diesel. The Mazda gets about 26. I have not driven the 86 4x4 yet. I had to get the harmonic balancer rebuilt and should have it on the road this week. I bought it last month for $700. I was going to put the engine from my other truck in it but it turns out it just needed a balancer.
With both of them running I am on the lookout for a parts truck.
 
Wow 30mpg+ out of a Ranger. Sounds like that may be my next determined search and purchase a diesel ranger. How are they for finding parts and working on? The 2.8L gas engine makes me scratch my head, curse, and throw things LOL.
 
Parts really arent that bad to find. if you only ask napa they dont have anything. I had a poorly adjusted valve and destroyed a piston and had another 2.2l shipped installed and had the truck running in 30 days. And I have never done an engine swap before. the longest part was getting the transmission aligned. They are very simple to work on. ebay and craigslist are your limitations for parts.
