i just got an 83 ranger and i can start it, it will idle but hen i hit the gas it sputters and drops to about 500 rpm sometimes it will just die 6 months ago i saw it running and driving then one day it just stopped im not to great with this motor only had a 2.9 let me know what yall think

Get a kit for the carb. If it idles but gives the symptoms you are describing the diaphragm for the accelerator pump is probably shot. Cleaning and kitting a carb isn't difficult if you need help simply ask.

Is the choke stuck closed it may need a new choke thermostat or choke relay? The choke relay is mounted by the start solenoid it may just need to be cleaned the connector.

i found that it shoots gas out of the top of the carb when i try to give it gas it sputters then that happens im going to clean the carb and see where that takes me

If you are going to take the carb apart, get a carb kit its like $30 and if you inside cleaning it you may as well make the time worth while. I have fuel that comes out of the accelerator pump location due to who knows what's failed yet, and I have a leak under the front of the carb where there's another access cover for something as well. I'm waiting for weather to straighten out and have a couple days off work in a row to do a complete tear down and rebuild of mine. This will be my first automotive carb work, I've rebuild several small engine carbs and have been told there isn't that much difference just size. If the carb isn't adjusted right and internal parts are worn anything can happen, my carb won't even stay adjusted and idle right so its definitely a great candidate for a rebuild.
