i recently purchased a 83 ranger with the 2.8, im fairly certain i know why it wont run, but i want to clarify. so it will crank over and dam near start up when starting fluid is sprayed in the carb. they folks i got it off said it has bin sitting for a bit. so my question would be is it bad fuel that was left in it? and if so how could i fix that, im guessing suck the old gas out and put fresh in? any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Well it could be a number of problems, old gas being one of them, depending on how long it sat, and changing that out would be a good idea whether that's the problem or not. But, unless it sat for a very long time it would probably at least fire up with old gas, and just run like crap. Since it sputters you should have spark, (new spark plugs would be a good idea, cheap and easy to change) so its in the fuel system somewhere. I would use carb cleaner rather than starting fluid to spray in the carb, although starting fluid should have cleaned it out pretty good, the carb cleaner is a little safer. I'd change the fuel filter, its on the carb where the fuel line goes in, also cheap and easy. If that doesn't work I'd go to the fuel pump, which is kind of a bugger to get at, especially if you have AC. Its a mechanical run off the cam, bolted on the drivers side of the block towards the front. You need an open ended 13mm wrench and some patience, you can only turn it a little at a time without removing things. Taking off the oil pressure sensor might give you some more room. That is if your sure you have spark, a common problem on these is the timing gear to shatter, they're made out of plastic type crap. Without it you won't have fuel pressure, spark, or valve movement, but if its sputtering like you say this shouldn't be the issue. An easy way to tell is take the cap off the distributer and make sure the rotor is turning when you turn it over.

Instead of taking the pump off you could hook up some kind of pressure gauge to the end of the fuel line where it goes into the carb, I think its supposed to be like 15 lbs or so. I used one off of my brake bleeder one time. If you have pressure you can save some time and effort. Duraspark and a good reman carb would take a lot of the guesswork out of this, depending on how much you want to put into this.

I would work the throttle on the carbutetor by hand and look for a spray of fuel. If not, it's probably time for a carbutetor cleaning/rebuild.

Put a screwdriver in the automatic choke to hold it open then push the pedal to the floor and try and start it. It could be it slugged some water pull a plug and see if it is wet? If so see if it burns with a lighter. If not pour a little good gas down the carb and crank on it.

well shit...since ive gotten it home now it doesnt even wana turn over at all when i hit the key. i know the battery is good and i replaced the solenoid, had the starter tested. im guessing something in the ignition?? any ideas? i check all the wires and fuses.
