Not sure how you would start something that big

I know on some of the larger diesels they use compressed air in the cylinders to get them turning with no compression then add fuel and compression

There is always smaller deisel engines to power generators, hydraulics, and the air compressors. If the main engine fails the ship will still have electricity, hydraulics for steering, and air to restart the main. There's usually a ton of air tanks kept full all the time too for restarting and running other equiptment. I've seen an engine the size of a double decker bus started at a naval museum in germany. It took about 15 minutes to get it rotating fast enough with air, then they light the plugs, dump in fuel, and close off compression similar to starting a truck by rolling it down a hill and letting out the clutch.

Probably not that large, it took two 454's to start an SR-71 engine.

A lot of big land equipment had "pony" motors to start back in the day. LIke Cat dozers, Cat helped JD get into diesels so that carried over to the two cyl JD diesels as well.

We had an old tractor that started with shotgun shells. I was a kid but I remember my grandfather loading it, firing a shell, and it would turn over slowly then BANG... And then fire up. Too young to remember what it was but I definitely remember the shotgun shells. It never started on one shot so he'd keep shoving a shell in... BANG!

Yes, that reminded me of the 1965 version of "The flight of the phoenix"
Aircraft and tanks used Coffman engine starter (also known as a "shotgun starter")

Tractors used slightly different version but same idea
