i got A 88 RANGER and im going to tomorrow to the j/y to get me a 8.8 rear end what year is the best one to get i have the mustang brakes im going to put on it pz help me out i work like to get the best on

best one is out of a Explorer...right width, bolt pattern, and have the larger axle shafts....

at my JY's they will charge the same amount with or without brakes when getting a complete axle...so if you find a 95+ Ex you will already have discs mounted so you won't need to swap anything...

just remember you need to weld on new spring perches cause all Ex's were spring under....as well as shock mounts...

The Explorer axle is 3" wider then the 1st/2nd gen Ranger axle.

The 93+ Ranger axle is about 1.5" wider then the 1st/2nd gen axle.

The Mustang rear brakes that you already have wont work on the Ex axle.

From the tech library.

8.8 Users:

Ranger 4.0
1990-1992
Width is same as other pre-93 axles, 28 spline
3.08 (4x2), 3.55, 3.73 and 4.10 (4x4) factory ratios
Either limited slip or open differential
10" drum brakes

Ranger 4.0
B4000
1993+
1994+
Width is same as other 93+ axles (1.5" wider than pre 93), 28 spline
Ratios and differential options as noted above

Ranger FX4
2002+
Width is same as other 93+ axles, 31 spline
4.10's and Torsen limited slip from factory

Explorer
Navajo
1990-1994
Width is 1.5" wider than 93+ Ranger, 3" wider than pre-93, 31 spline
Spring perches must be fabricated and welded on top
Stock spring perches can be used to lower the truck (like a flip kit)
Shock mounts must be fabricated and welded on
Very common to find ltd. Slip, usually 3.73 or 4.10 (4x4) gears

Explorer
Mountaineer
1995-2001
Same as above, also has rear discs

The rear in my Ranger is about the same degree wider than the 7.5 was narrower than the front. You get a severely stronger axle and disc brakes in one foul swoop, hands down it is the way to go IMO if you want a stronger axle and disc brakes.
