I have a 00' XLT sport and how do i tell if i have a 8.8. or 7.5 and what gearing too?and what spline would i have as i am interested in a posi upgrade......any suggestions?.....
thanks

What engine do you have in it? A 7.5 will be more of an oval shaped diff cover and an 8.8 will be a rounder diff cover.

There should be a small rectangular tag bolted to the diff cover more than likely on the right side it should say something like 3L73 but that's an example it will depend on if you have an open diff or lmtd slip, if you don't have the tag or can't find it you can read the sticker on the driverside door pillar right below the door jam and use the tech library to help decode it, ps don't use the vin# its the other #

NICE....thanks all very quick reply's .....now what is a good posi unit for the 8.8?would a mustang 8.8 work or is that a bad idea, aftermarket and which one?...not going to be doing any serious off roading but you never know and the winters here in Canada can be plenty-some as some of you here already know

your example would be 3:73 correct?

from what i understand the strength, so far as wheeling is concerned, is the same becaues both axle shafts are the same diameter and have the same breaking strength, and the axle shafts seem to be the weak point in both, esp. the 8.8. only real advantage is the availibility of after market stuff for the 8.8 is far more extensive than the 7.5.

The best 8.8 to use would be the one out of an explorer they are substantially stronger and practically bolt right in the only thing you have to do is flip the spring perch so they are mounted on the top of the rear end if you don't do this you will drop the back of your truck about 3 or more inches

if you dont see an L then it means you have an open diff. but every tag ive seen so far doesnt have the : between the numbers ill give you a better example the tag on my truck says 4L10 8 8 which is stating the i have a limited slip with 4.10s and the 8.8 rearend if your seeing 3 73 with no letters chances are you have an open diff ill insert a pic of a tag http://www.mre-books.com/images/image35.gif thats the link ignore everything but the gear ratio number and the ring gear size

ahhhh ha.......8.8 with 3:73's open diff i have...thank toy very much.....and which posi would you say to get?

If I were to get a limited slip it would be a Detroit tru-trac.

I wouldn't worry much about the strength of the 27 spline axles. I've been pushing 36" TSL's locked on those for quite a while now with no problems. Unless you get silly with the throttle when you shouldn't, you'll be fine.
