swapping an 8.8 for my 7.5

my question is, what is the electric plug/wire that connects to the back of the diff? temp?

It is a sensor for the tone ring. It helps with rear ABS. and speed sensor.
 
do i need it?
where would i need to hook it up too?
 
Since you are working on the 87 I'm guessing you should not need it. the 87 doesn't have RABS. So just throw the rear end under the truck and get going.
