Can I put the guts of a LSD in my open diff housing with my ring and pinion gears? Getting a LSD tonight and don't want to swap whole rear end. Both are 8.8". The LSD is from an explorer xlt and I have a ranger splash.

If you mean just swapping the carriers, then no. The Explorer is a 31 spline and the Ranger is 28.

Yeah gotta get the whole rear end if you're swapping b/w ranger & explorer. Then you'd have to weld new perches for the explorer axle.

i'd put the whole EX 8.8 in there if it's a disc and like the other dudes said, no the carriers wont swap over. well, the carriers would swap over (and the ring and pinion), but the guts of the LSD are 31 spline and your axleshafts are 28 spline.

What do you mean weld new perches? It's just a bolt in isn't it? Swapping the whole unit that is.

Nope. The Explorer had the axle mounted on top of the springs vs. under on your Ranger. Not a huge deal if you can weld or know someone who can.

I just did some research on it and see what you mean. I'm a certified welder mig stick and flux so I can do it. Would the whole thing fit in my ranger rear end if I put the new bearings that are the right size for the exp rear end. Or is it easier to re do the exp rear end weld the perches and shock mounts on and put that in my truck.

Is having the LSD worth all the hassle I already have the 8.8" rear end. I live in northern ny so if it will help me in the snow it might be worth it

You have to swap the whole axle. Expolrer tubes are thicker than the ranger tubes. I think it would be worth it for the lsd and the disc brakes.

Well honestly an LSD is not very good. If I was you I'd get a locker. You can get a lockrite for $300 and that will be 10x better than a LSD. Lockers take about a couple hours to install and anyone mechanically inclined can do it. If you want disc brakes get the 94-04 mustang gt brakes and backing plates.

Explorer axles are stronger, but not much, and if you have less than 33s then your axle will last forever. I've got a 7.5" behind a 4.0 with 3.73s and 33s and it doesn't complain a bit.

I'm getting the LSD rear for free would that make it worth it. All it's going to cost me is the price of new seals a gasket and fluid. Plus what the spring mounts and shock hangars. And a little time.
