which one should i use in my bronco ii?
they are both full width and staying that way.
i like where the pinion is better in the 8.8.
plan on fully building which ever one i choose.
thanks

What size tires you plan to run? Stock 2.8 engine? or something else? (4.0L, 5.0L, 5.8L?)

Both axles are almost dead-even strengthwise when stock (8.8 stock carrier excepted) and will handle up to about 37" tires under a RBV, although the 9 can be built up into a stronger unit (more aftermarket parts like 35 spline shafts available. I think there might be some 33 spline 8.8 stuff out there though, not sure, haven't checked in awhile).

Unless you plan on sinking a good chunk of change into the 9", go with the 8.8. In stock form the 31 spline full width 8.8 is stronger than a stock 9".

I will agree the 8.8 will be fine. A big bearing 31 spline 9in is stronger than a stock 8.8 any day though. As far as aftermarket the 8.8 is getting good but the 9in has been around since 57 so there obviously more support for that. The trick for the 8.8 is go aftermarket carrier, solid pinion spacer instead of a crush sleave, and c-clip eliminator and you will have an 8.8 that will hold serious power.
