A 9 inch is a third member style diff, where The pinion, bearings, and cluster are all one piece... The 8.8 is a normal (most common) style with an inspection plate, while you could technically just pull the inspection plate, pull the cluster out, and stick a new one in, with the same gears, that is/is not l/s, and put it back together, it is not a good idea, because your gears won't line up perfectly, back lash and what not...
It is not the same style diff, so the 20 minute gear changes thatnyou can do with the 9 inch, is not possible
