8.8 L/S questions??

I have a 1995 ranger 4x4 supercab with a 8.8 rear end with 3:73 gears and the factory limited slip. I've heard that the clutches in these l/s wear out quite often and was wondering how you can tell if they are wore out? Will it make any sounds like a popping when taking off or anything? I had the cover off a few months ago when I changed the fluid and didn't see anything strange laying in there. If they are worn out, do I have to pull the whole carrier out to replace them and then have to reset the ring and pinion? Where is the best place to get the clutches? Ford only or any parts place?? Any help would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

Usually the 1st sign of a worn out L/S diff is a loss of effectiveness, which generally goes unnoticed until some situation arises that makes it obvious it's not gripping anymore.
A large amount of axial end play on the shafts usually accompanies worn out clutch packs as well.

A test for a worn out L/S involves jacking up ONE rear tire, putting the trans in neutral and measuring how much torque it takes to turn the wheel. It's said in the manual that at least 20ft-lbs indicates a functioning limited slip.

The dealer would have replacement clutch kits, though I do believe you can also get them through places like Summit Racing also.

I know the carrier has to come out and the ring gear removed on a 7.5", though on the 8.8" I think it can be done with the carrier still in the axle (I think).
