planning a gear swap ,lockright install, swaybar removal and warn manual hub swap in april -now our lead tech did the 28/7.5 in no time and it came out fine but he did not install a locker,i know he is not on fire about the locker in the 8.8 but being a rear locker (the other gear swap had a frt lock right that he passed on)i am hoping he will do it- here is my question 4 u -will a lunchbox locker go into a 1994 8.8 open rear end WITHOUT having to grind a tooth like people talk about on the 7.5? now if gears and a Detroit locker (i know he can do a detroit as he JUST put one in our bosses K5 last month!)are easier i will spend the extra to get it

If he can't install a lockright I would be looking for a new tech.....

supermoderator,huh?

I don't know why I should have expected a more well crafted answer from one of the "ANOINTED" leaders of this site ,heck it's just the internet. I guess answers are worth what you pay for them :icon_thumby:

what's wrong with grinding the gear tooth? it's not really a big deal, but not necessary unless going past 4.56 gears I think. I ground the tooth on my 5.13's so I could use the stronger stock cross pin, locker install isn't that big of a deal, they come with instructions, if he doesn't want to do it you could do it in your driveway easy enough.

A detroit locker would be better, but I don't know if it's worth the extra $300ish

comeback redo

i am pretty sure the real drawback is not ability but not knowing the possible outcome of grinding a tooth-it also is costing him money to build my toy as you won't find LOCKER INSTALL in the mitchell manual and instead of being able to knock out alignments and diags where he can crush the flat rate he is dicking around with a coworkers toy. maybe a better question is -what is the difference between lockright install and detroit install- is there any grinding with detroit in an 8.8 with 4.56?

Even without a locker you still have to grind the gear tooth to fit 4.56's in the 8.8.

With a detroit it has it's own cross pin....I'm pretty sure when I installed mine there was no need to grind the gear tooth.

Really if you, it takes maybe 30 seconds to clearance it enough to get the pin in.

If you go lockright do NOT allow him to use a notched cross shaft.

And what I was getting at with my previous comment was that anyone in their driveway can install a lockright...if a tech can't there is an issue.
