This being my first 4x4 build I am still gathering my bearings.. With an 8.8 in the rear and dana 35 ttb in front all stock to my knowledge what is the best way to lock this set up.. of course the cheapest would be to Lincoln lock it all but from reading it seems the 8.8 is a decent axel and I don't want to trash it by welding it so maybe I should purchase a locker. But the 35 on the other hand is not the greatest and maybe I should just weld it and run it till it breaks and upgrade to something better.. Inputs for good 8.8 lockers and weather building up the 35 or or to weld it and eventually break it and replace appreciated

This has been pounded alot. The 8.8 in a ranger has less splines than an explorer. But I've yet tto hear of somebody breaking either. Its the same 8.8 from a f150. Look on your ddoor or the axle find out if it has limited slip if so the only locker you can get is like 550$. The Dana 35 is plenty strong just use your head.

People have ran 40s on a 35. Its strong enough for 35s. I asked branikmotorsports motor sports about chromo shafts for it. 250 a side. If you weld it id expect you to break it. The aussie is only 250$. What size tires you plan on running?

I would build the ttb even if I was running 37s

probably looking at 33s at first depending on how I decide to lift it. And ouch 550 for the rear locker will the door plainly say limited slip or some assorment of letters/numbers to say its limited slip what would be the other option just completely open??

The axle code can tell you if it is limited or not, but its easier to try and find the axle tag. The axle tag, if legible, will say something to the effect of 3 75 if it is open or 3L75 if it is limited slip, the numbers being the gear ratio.

And yes, unless someone modified something already the options are limited slip or open. Up until recently Ford did not offer a factory locker.

NO :shok:

The Ranger 28 spline 8.8 is a Ranger 8.8. It is similar to what they put in a Mustang.

The Explorer 31 spline 8.8 is the same as what they put in the lighter F-150's aside from a smaller wheel bolt pattern, smaller brakes and being narrower.

In the past they did like to call the "Trak-Lok" or limited slip a "locking differential" though, so don't go running around thinking there is a unicorn out there if you read it in their literature.

That's what I meant.
