hey yall ive just pick up a rear end off the back of a ranger level 2 fx4, yall know the 4.10 8.8 locker rear end. Anyway my 4 banger has 31s on it with a 3.73 Ls right now and its just bearly humpin along, just wonderin if the 4.10 is gonna do its justice and if yall have any experience with a 4 cylinder with 4.10s and 31s before i go putting it on, thanks

IMO, no. It really needs 4.56s, 4.10s is certainly an improvement though.

4.10 is half decent but 5th gear isn't much use until about 65mph when you get into the power band... that is unless you are on a FLAT road

Can he add more bands to add more power???????????

And yes the 4.10 will make a difference. 10% is better than nothing. But as said earlier 4.56 will improve it by 22%. What tires came on your truck? 28s? If so 31s are 10% bigger. But that does not take into effect the added weight and wind resistance of being a little bit higher.

yeah i got my ranger with 29'' tires and a 3.73, i figure ill just go back to 29s when i get the money.... but my 31's look so good :(

Well one thing is certain... he won't be breaking that 31-spline Torsen with a 4-Banger.

Ys, but you don't entirely get my reference...

The Torsens had a tendency to physically break the carrier
in 4.0SOHC trucks.

Do understand that if it IS an FX4 rear it is not only a Torsen,
but a 31-spline axle as well.

that has advantages and disadvantages...

A disadvantage is that should you need an axle shaft ONLY an FX4
shaft will work.

The advantage is should you desire to convert it to disc brakes
the explorer backing plates and rotors will bolt right on
