72 Mustang Rearend

Thoughts on an 8" rear end from a 72 mustang.i have one and thought about narrowing it. It'd go in my 87 Ranger SWB 4wd. I have 31 inch tires and won't go taller than that. It also has the right bolt pattern for my ranger rims.

Must have been a 6 cyl car that it was from. And you shouldn't have to narrow it its 61.25" wide.

Whats wrong with the rear diff in your truck?

IIRC in the 60's and 70's most small/midsize cars v-6 or v-8 came with 8". Only when there was a hi-performance or big block was a 9" used. They were all 4.5" stud spacing too.

All v8 mustangs 71-73 got the 9".

My 72 302/c4 mustang has a 28 spline 9".

At least from 64-68 there were 3 axles possible in those mustangs. An match 8", a 9" and the 6cylinder rearend which had 4 lug wheels. I just checked and the rear end is a 9". The rear end in my Ranger is from a parts truck because the original was shredded. It's 3.55 gears and the truck came with 3.73 so right now it doesn't match the front. The pinon seal is leaking and if I'm gonna spend money I'd rather put it in the 9"

me personally would rather have a explorer 8.8, think about it, the 8.8 has more ground clearance, bigger pinion shaft diameter than a 9 inch, about as much aftermarket support as a 9 inch, the only downside is the c clips.. but im just stating my opinion

Not true I'm had 2 71-73s that had a 302 & c4 and had a 8" in them.
