Hey all. Planning on swapping axles this summer to get 4.10 gears, and I was wondering if the Ford 8.8 (Ranger) uses the same brakes etc as the Ford 7.5?

If they don't I'll stick with a 7.5 with 4.10's since I have brand new brakes and stuff in the rear.

sorry to tell you, but the brakes are different sizes, and your 7.5 brakes will not bolt onto the 8.8 axle...

Losing the 9" brakes (new or not) shouldn't be a deal breaker.

The 8.8" axle comes with much more reliable 10" drum brakes.

Yeah, but everything brake related is new on the truck. My ex girlfriends father dropped a couple hundred fixing it up for me as an xmas present.

I'll probably stick with a 7.5 then, I won't be doing anything that would need an 8.8 anyway.

you guys know the 7.5 came with both 9" AND 10" brakes, right? from what ive seen, most gen 3 trucks got 10" brakes.

if youve got 10" brakes now, everything can be swapped over.

Virtually all 4x4 gen3's got 10" brakes, on the 2wd's the supercabs usually
did, but not always.

Wait a minute.

I thought the backing plates could be swapped between the 7.5's and 28 spline 8.8's.?

Btw, my 93' 4x4 came with 9" brakes.

I'm 99.9999% sure the 7.5 plates will not fit the 8.8's due to their different tube size...

I'll check when I jack up the rear next week to do my shocks.

It's a 2wd supercab, so I guess that could mean a decent chance of having either.

The only difference between the 28 spline 7.5" and 8.8" is the center section.

Everything from one will bolt onto the other, the axle tubes are the same, even the axles can be swapped provided they are from the same generation Ranger.

I installed a 92 8.8" in place of my 90's 7.5", the 92 ended up having bent axles so I just replaced them with the axles out of the 7.5".

The only one that is different is the FX4 axle, it's a 31 spline with larger tubes & bearings.

Yep....I was thinking that shafts and brakes interchange.

Well, I stand corrected. Should've known that 0.000001% chance would be against me:D
