how do i know what rear end i have in my 1997 2.3L 4 cyl. manual trans. mazda B2300 or aka ranger? i dont know if it has a 7.5 or 8.8 ford rear because both came in them? so how can i tell???

4 cylinders got the 7.5 I would think...

Check your axle code on the sticker inside the door. If it starts with a 8 or F, you have a 7.5... 9 or R is 8.8"

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html

Find your axle code on there and it'll give you your ratio.

Alternatively you could find the tag on the axle. Probably a metal strip hanging off one of the cover bolts. That link will help you decode it.

The 4 cylinder Rangers came with the 7.5, but if you wanted to double check you can take the steps above

thanks guys i will definitely do that and secondly i have a 8.8 limited slip rear end from a 89 ford bronco full size would that fit under the ranger without being too wide or will it hang out too far?

depends what you consider too far... many people run fullsize axles, look around for pics of how it turns out. The difference is only around 6" total width I think... So with some extra-big fenders, its totally doable.

it'd wider and you'd have to have perches mounted closer together... And as far as i know all rangers are 7.5 unless it was swapped...i could be wrong... the fx4s however did come with a 28 spline... but for your 97 im 80% its a 7.5 open diffrential

Nope. 4.0s always had 8.8" rears.
The FX4 axles that are rare are 31-spline, like an explorer axle. The 7.5 and Ranger 8.8 are 28 spline.
There is nothing to tell you or I if it is open, chances are just as likely it is a L/S.

Tech Library states the 8.8" Is always in 90+ 4.0 Rangers. I dont work for Ford, so I can't guarantee anything, but I generally believe the stuff in the tech library.

lolz...Surrey is right... i shoulda known, i just put a Xploder axle in my 98 less than a year ago...and did all the research on axles...

i just picked up a 93 Splash with a 4.0...to add to the collection

double check your axle codes though...who knows what got put in there though.

Every fx4 level II from 2002 and newer, came with a limited slip 31 spline 8.8, made by torsen international, (true level II's only, there were some level 1.5's kicking around badges as 2's) most v6 models had the 28 spline 8.8, and 4 cylinder's had the 7.5, though they may be mixed up...

The biggest difference between the 31 spline on the fx4/II's is the drum brakes, vs explorers typically having disk brakes

You sir are wrong too, there are many ways to figure out if it's a l/s, for one, look at the axle tag, if it has an L where the period should be, on the bottom left corner ofthe tag, in the ratio 3L55 instead of 3.55 it's an l/s, the door code will tell you also, and in 90% of cases, you can jack both rear wheels off the ground, tranny in park or first, ebrake off, if you can turn one wheel, it's open, if you can't, its l/s

like --weezle-- said..look at the tag....bottom left numbers are the gear ratio...bottom right numbers/letter should either start with 75 or 88 which tells you your answer

No Im not.
I said there is no way for me or King, not the OP to tell. I can't see the OPs truck, and I doubt King can either.

I already listed exactly how the OP can tell wtf is under his truck, and told him its most likely a 7.5 as that is what came with the 4cylinder trucks.

edit - plus your way of "testing" if its an LS doesn't tell you if you have a LS carrier that just has blown clutches, or an open carrier... and considering the truck is 13 years old, chances are at least as likely for it to be toast by now.

Middle numbers on the bottom are size... Bottom right are date
