Hey guys, I just would like to know how long you think this axle will last with a basically stock 302 v8? Should I drive it with the 7.5 for a while till I brake the new engine in and get a 8.8 set-up and ready or swap in the beginning? I guess I have two questions.

My ranger has a 7.5 in it and I have a 302 in there. No problems with it so far. Ford didn't put the 8.8 under a Mustang until '86. My 85 GT was modded and I had a 7.5 in there for a while with no problems.

If you have an open differential, not-so-sticky small diameter tires, and you are easy on the throttle then it'll hold. I opted for an Explorer 31 spline 8.8" axle in my truck because my tires are a softer compound and a 3,000rpm stall speed puts the engine in its torque curve right away.

Since you have a 4x4, what tires are you running? you'll be fine for the break-in period but I wouldn't beat it too hard.

Like v8nick said, they had the 7.5 in the mustangs till they went fuel injection, as long as you're not gonna mod the motor too much or dump the clutch alot, it should work just fine!!!!

The 7.5 is stronger than most give it credit for. Run it, but save up for an upgrade.

v8nick, guess i really didn't know mustangs only had 7.5s back then. I appreciated all the feedback. So now what is the weak point in the 7.5 axle specifically that would fail first if anyone knows.

spider gears then cross pin...

My brother's 79 coupe had something like a 6" rear end in it. He pulled the 2.3 and dropped in a warmed up 5.0. Yeah, that rear lasted 1 good launch. I gave him a spare 7.5 that I had 5 years ago and it's still under the car to this day.
