Do I need to remove the carrier to change the pinion seal or can I just remove the nut and flange off the pinion gear?

What does the nut need to be tightened down to when I re-install the flange and nut on the pinion gear? I don't want to over tighten it.

When i did mine I just removed the flange, removed the old seal, tapped in a new one.

Not sure what the torque spec is for the nut though. Maybe someone else can chime in with that info.

The Ford manuals say 160 ft-lbs, and then check preload. If it's above 15 inch-lbs (for old bearings), replace the crush sleeve. If it's below 8 inch-lbs, crank it down until it's above.

And use red Loctite or (preferably) a new pinion nut.

While screwing this up is not as obviously bad as getting an edge-intersecting contact pattern, it can eat up the pinion bearings in short order.

Hint (borrowed from another board member): Thread an M12x1.75 bolt through the companion flange, with the carrier removed, to keep the flange from turning while cranking down.

Another trick is to mark the nut and the pinion shaft so that you can put the nut back on to the exact same location as before and in the ideal world, the exact same preload on the bearings. Doing it this way means that you dont have to take anything else apart either.

What is the best way to mark it?

white out? Some sort of chalk marker?

you can do that but its not the right way to do it and 'may' cause failure if you dont understand preload and crush sleeves

I prefer to use a small center punch and give the pinion shaft and the nut a good mark with it.
