i got a 8.8 shell and i have 3.27s in it and i have a 3.73 ring and l/s but i couldnt get the pinion it was cracked.. ive read the pinion on a 7.5 and a 8.8 are the same 1.626shaft diamter. but the spline counts are diffrent 8.8 is 30 and 7.5 is 28 .. can i use the 7.5 pinion in the 8.8 and use the diffrent cap with the splines in it for drive shaft. or should i go back 2 junk yard and just get a 8.8 l/s 3.73 ring and pinion out of the explore along with axles and do a 31 spline axle conversion.. or can i just buy pinions with out ring gears. i also know were a pinion is in a empty hosuing from a 3.73 8.8 but i dont know how 2 get pinion out with out air tools andy info helps thanks

ring and pinion are a matched pair... so that's a negatory on all but getting a matched ring and pinion out of the junkyard...

to get a pinion out without air tools, get a piece of 3/16" or thicker steel strap a couple feet long or so by at least 1 1/2" wide and drill 2 holes spaced far enough apart to get to 2 of the flange bolts on the input flange, put those 2 bolts in and get yourself a 27mm socket and a breaker bar, maybe take a propane or butane torch to loosten the loctite on the pinion nut, you should be able to get it off.

once i get pinion nut off the pinion will be able to be pushed out?? the nuts is on the outside were the drive shaft goes correct. just break that and tap the pinion out???

once the carrier is out it should just pop out, if it doesn't stick the nut on backwards a little ways and wack it with a dead blow hammer or something and it should pop out
