Is there a trick to removing the c-clip "u-washer" from the end of the axle shaft, in the spider gears. Or do I just have to work it off with a punch or screwdriver?

Did you take the pinion pin out first? Then all you need to do is push the axle in and the clip should just about fall out.

If you can't get to the c-clips, you may not have the carrier pin out yet. It's the solid pin that runs right in between the spider gears. There is a small bolt holding it in. Remove it and the pin will slide right out with liitle help. Then push the axle shafts in a little and push the c-clips off. Then you'll be able to pull the shafts out.

yep, that was the problem, I should have known better
thanks

Happens....

Made the same mistake the first time I took an axle apart.
