I have a chance to buy a 6 cyl. 3.0. I hear the mpg is lowsy but I tow with it a few times a year. I currently have a 2001 4 banger and its way underpowered. Will a 2.3L Duratec 4 cyl. pull when I need it to or should I go for the 6 cyl. I can buy a 2003 6 cyl. with only 21K on it for 9K.

Buy it! You'll be much happier.

I just did a mpg check on my truck, 98 extra cab 4X4 3.0L automatic trans, stock tires gets 20 Mpg mixed around town and highway.
Thats 70% town, 30 % highway driving.
Thats way better than the 4.9L straight six in my F150

The 3.0 is not a powerhouse, but most 3.0 owners swear by their engines. It's a mature engine platform with very few common problems that has great reliability. Many will go several hundred thousand miles. Many of the common complaints of low power or poor mileage can be solved by minor mods like underdrive pullies, an electric cooling fan, exhaust systems and roller rockers.
Personally, I average 22mpg when I run gasoline in my truck. Thats with basic bolt ons in a 2wd truck with 3.73's. And I'm very happy with the power gains from my mods.
