Been amassing the parts to swap a 6.8L V10 into my 2005. So far from what I have seen online size wise the motor should fit. Couple of examples of the 5.4L fitting without cutting the firwall. The 6.8L just adds 4" in the front over the 5.4L and it ends up being shorter than the 302 from the dimensions I found.

So here are some questions to start off.

Pats...I am getting the ECU from the 02, my truck is an 05 can I just take the truck/keys in to be reprogrammed for the ECU at the dealership?

Radiator...From what I see online 1.5 square inches of surface area per cubic inch of displacement and 3.0 cubic inches of cooling volume per HP. 414 cubic inch 2 valve works out to needing 621sqare inches of surface area and 930 cubic inches of cooling volume. Explorer radiator works out to 49x.00 square inches of surface area and 138x cubic inches of cooling volume. Is that good enough?

Gauges...I have heard the 2005 gauges are different to wire to than the older models. Is that going to be an issue or just something I need to trace out in the wiring diagrams?

I say box the frame.

It's not as much as long as it is a wide of a setup. A 4.6 is a snug fit in the newer rangers.

I am already boxed up to the cab. I plan to fish plate at the motor mounts other than that it should be fine eventually I will box all the way back, but not yet.

how about a 460 swap? more power and easier to swap in..or are you doing it for the cool factor?

You have to push the firewall back to fit a 460 I don't believe I will have to for the 6.8L I fail to see how it will be easier. It also makes more power stock than an EFI 460 why buy something I will instantly have to work on to make it as good.

302 dimensions
29" long waterpump pulley to rear mounting surface
22" wide
27" tall carb top to front sump

6.8L dimensions
27 1/8" long waterpump pulley to rear mounting surface
27" wide
28 1/2" tall top of the factory van intake to the bottom of the factory oil pan

BBF 460 dimensions
34" long
27" wide
30" tall

The 6.8L is a good bit smaller than a BBF...

The 02 donor is not gauranteed to have pats. If it doesnt you should not have to deal with it. If it does a simple parameter reset and key program is all that should be needed.

Anyway to tell before it gets here not that it seems like it matters since I can just get it reprgorammed.

You don't happen to have the keys for it do you?

I will email the guy and ask, but I know both my own personal '02 F250 and ranger both have this style key.

The key in this pic IS NOT PATS!

SD's didn't have chip keys till 2011 I believe and your 05 Ranger should have PATS unless it was a Fleet vehicle.

Everything Ford made had PATS as an option by 2003. In 2005 it was a standard feature on Rangers that could be deleted, so not all of them have it in 05.

A Super Duty could very well have PATS long before 2011.

I have seen the fatter key which I assume is the PATS key in an older than 2011 superduty...

Mine for sure has that key I am holding it in my hand. Will be nice if I don't have to worry about PATS that's for sure.

Dad's '04 has the same key and no PATS.

I fit a long water pump 302 in my Ranger with no firewall mods and a two row radiator bolted in the same place Ford hung a single row radiator.

On paper it sounds plausable enough to fit... :icon_thumby:

I would have too much faith in that measurement, The Ford Motorsport catalog listed the 4.6l as 28" long... And that has 2 less cylinders.
