sooo i have a 94 ranger xlt 4.0 liter with a 5 speed believe its by mazda and one day 5th gear dissapeared just sits like its in nuetral.....i did some research and from what i can find its from a retainer ring that wore out and allowed 5th gear to walk away....so what im asking is if this could happen and do they sell these retainer rings at dealerships...if so what would the proper name of the retainer ring be??

Guessing you have an M5OD transmission, if that's the case see if you can locate a parts diagram online for it, I'm sure there are many places here to find them as well. From what I can find so far is its called a lock-up ring. Not sure where you can get one, but looks like you would have to buy a whole rebuild kit from what I can find.

Someone on here that has messed with these transmissions more may have better advice for you though.

I just threw all those parts in the trash...

If only you posted up a week ago...

Surely another member has recently torn down an M5 or 2, and has those lying around.

First ranger I ever had was a '97 with the M5OD and it had this problem. I would up having to replace the whole 5th gear, the guy I bought it from somehow managed to shear the gear so the cogs would just freewheel.

I have a complete set of gears, synchros, collar, and fork for 5th that I can part with....

PM if you are interested.
