Does anyone have a step by step possibly with pictures and all of changing out the 5th and reverse synchronizer, In the Navy, and it has been forever since I worked on a manual transmission, just lost my sister to cancer and I paid the funeral bill, am tight for cash, I have the tools and have the Haynes and Chilton Manuals, but might as well be reading a Curious George book for getting this done. Any and all help is appreciated. Why is this Navy guy riding around in such and old truck? well one son is in college the other is a junior in high school, starts his senior year this august. Besides I love this truck, might trade a kid in for it! nah, keeping them all!:headbang:

There is no syncro for reverse, and it is odd 5th would go out before 2nd... what is it doing? Popping out of gear or won't go into 5th?

^^agree with Snake^^
Give some more info on what the transmission is or is not doing?

Reverse grinds and pops out

So if I put the truck in reverse it will start out slow and then grinds like I missed shifting which I did not since it was already in gear and pop out. So I tried the well I will hold the darn thing in and back up and it just made even more noise. So did the old heave hoe and pushed her backward and got her home, All gears work fine but on the highway fifth was a little difficult getting into. She been sitting in the drive way since. Had to let the pony out of the barn and take her to work, she is also an 89, but a modified 5.0 should call her an 8.0 and the gas is killing me. High quality oats that one is all that eats! Hope that made it clear to you. Thanks for the feedback.:icon_hornsup:

Sounds more like a bearing. Either way it has to come out. Try car-part.com and see if you can find a low-mileage el cheapo from the boneyard. Then just swap it out.

Actually you can leave the transmission in the truck and pull the tailshaft off to see what is going on. Every thing should stay intact. Drain the fluid first. Remove the driveshaft. There should be about 10 or so bolts holding the tailshaft on. Once you get the tailshaft housing off post some pics. If it is a bearing like Snake said then you will have to pull the transmission out to get the shafts out.

Where is Sling Blade when you need Em??

Back home. I tell you I got talking to my little brother who I taught all about working on chevy's, he is ten years younger, he said well isn't that a hydraulic clutch? did you check the fluid under the hood? :icon_cheers: So slap me silly! Sure enough, put some Dot 3, pump the pedal, can squeal them tires in revers and the first two gears again! He has brought me my joy back:yahoo:

Bad news there is, your slave cylinder is probably leaking - which still means the trans has to come out.

As long you know how to take out the transmission, It should be very easy to replace the slave cylinder. The slave cylinder is what helps you shift gears with ease. Without it, your going to be miserable. I had one that was bad and I had to keep on bleeding it over and over until it was completely worn out. Replaced it and life is so much better!

P.S. Thank you for serving our country sir! We truly appreciate it very much!!! :)
