5spd manual flush?

Hey folks,

I was looking through threads regarding transmission flushes. Can this be done for the mazda 5-speed (m50r-D1 I think)? No filter to worry about, but I don't think there's a dipstick tube to flush from either...

There's not really any such thing as a manual transmission flush. It's really not necessary anyway, all you need to do is drain the old fluid and refill with fresh fluid. The only reason auto trannies can get flushed, is because that's pretty much the only way to exchange all the old fluid with fresh fluid. The term "flush" is also pretty misleading, because it doesn't actually force fluid through the trans, it just uses the transmission's own pump to pump the old fluid out while simultaneously adding fresh fluid at a steady rate.

And no, your trans doesn't have a dipstick. You check the fluid by removing a plug on the side of the trans. If a little bit of fluid starts dribbling out, it's full. If not, add fluid until it does start dribbling.

the only thing id like to add is drive the truck for 20-30 minutes before changing the fluid to get the transmission warmed up so you get more complete draining of the old fluid.

it prob wouldnt hurt while draining to add a lil fresh w/ the drain out to help rinse the old out of the case either. let it drain out and after its dribbling just add a few ounces of fresh and let it run out, this will help get any residual oil and deposits out as well. just my .02.

Really old post...but I was looking for an answer.
I was also wondering about this because my trans was full of water. I put fresh oil and now I'm replacing the t-case and see that it's still pretty nasty looking in the trans. Still shifts fine though.
So what I was wondering is this. Do you think it would be an ok idea to dump some ATF in and drive just enough to get to temp. and then drain? My reasoning is that ATF has a lot of detergents and it may help to "flush" out most of the nasty stuff.
Thoughts on this?

Should be ATF in your manual transmission anways.

Mine calls for 80-90 gear oil..it's the old fm-145 in the B2. My Explorer M5OD,yes Dex/Merc
