HI all I have a '97 2wd with 4.0 and auto obviously. I replaced the first tranny at 123K due to heavy use. My second tranny now has about 120K and is having issues. It is worse when cold but always a bit of an issue. It will not go into gear (Drive or Reverse) for probably a minute or more in the A.M. Then when warmed up will slip out of gear periodically when I slow or stop.

I hate to replace the tranny if it is a computor problem but I am throwing no codes when it happens so as far as the computer is concerned nothing is wrong. Any ideas on what to try. I have checked the fluid level and there is enough. Filter was was changed maybe 20K ago.

Thanks for the advise and yes I did a search first!

well it sounds like your tranny is doing exactly the same thing as the first one. did you expect any different? chances are that you need to replace it again. how many miles did the tranny have on it when you put it in?

Well actually the first time it was not having trouble going into gear. It was starting to shift harder in between gears. I replaced it since I was leaving on a trip around the U.S. and did not want to deal with any issues on the road. This tranny came from a junkyard with 6000 miles on it. It has run flawless until recently. I thought maybe it could be a computer issue or valve body. It is something similar to what happens when there is not enough fluid in the case to build up the proper pressure. I have seen other trannys have a similar problem due to lack of fluid but that is not the case of mine. I thought about seeing if there was an adjustament for the screen to possibly alter the flow rate in hopes that might solve the problem.

i dont know enough to answer your question but, that means that you have almost 250K miles on your truck? thats pretty good. i would just put another tranny in there if i were you. the truck will probably have other major issues before it goes through another transmission.

the auto trannys in rangers suck. they always have. it sounds like you have just worn it out, again.

yea the old girl is pushing 250k. Second motor and tranny but the rest of her is solid. I had a head go bad at 126K so I swapped ina fresh Junk yard motor with 4K on it. Other then that the only repairs other then normal servicing has been an A/C hose, door lock, and a bearings. She is running all the original engine bolt ons like Alt, starter, ac comp, rad, etc.

I have considered buying a new truck fora year but I just have no desire to start making payments again. I am thinking about dropping 5k into the truck to overhaul it. New tranny, paint, interior, line x bed, new suspension etc. Other then the tranny I would drive to WA state tomorrow. The ranger has always been good to me. Here is a pic of me and the old girl on one of many cross country trips. This is from Zion 3 years ago. the wife and I on one of our annual month long vacations in august. as usual living out of the ranger and camping in national forests and parks. We are always loaded with boats, bikes and the bed is full of our camping gear. Never onece has the truck left me stranded on the road.
