5R55E weird issue

so the guys at the shop here have no idea - maybe someone here can help me
1998 2wd ranger with auto trans. 5R55E (code d) only happens when I tow my boat - when I come back after 4-5 hours to take the boat out it will not go into gear- shifter moves but does not move in any gear -2-3 minuts of shifitng back and forth and it clunks into gear - once in gear is it fine rest of day or next morning it works fine - has never happened in the morning when cold - only after putting boat in- no codes on computer

any suggestions???

How many miles are on your truck, have you checked the fluid?? Any noises?? Try a filter and fluid change, and I'd also add an HD cooler (it sounds like its getting too hot)
