Hi all this is my first post here so I'll introduce myself as well, I just bought a 97 4.0/auto/4x4 with 122,xxx miles. I bought the truck from my friends grandfather. It's a 1 owner truck and I know he's taken pretty good care of the thing, but they thought the tranny was going so he sold it cheap. Anyways, it's just low on fluid (or so it seems). The truck hesitates going into gear, sometimes you need to rev it a little and it goes in within a few seconds. Any gear, R D 2 1 it does it. Once it's in gear it will hold fine and run through all the gears without slipping a bit. It only slips out again when you come to a stop. From what I'm thinking it's just because of the low fluid it's taking a little longer to build up pressure before going into gear. or the pump is going, or there's some varnish built up in the valve body preventing it from building up pressure as fast as it should. I haven't had time to get to a parts store to get the correct tranny fluid yet, I have merc/dex but it says do not use in trannys calling for mercon v which is what the dipstick says. Sorry for the wall of text, I probably don't sound too smart after all that either but I am mechanically inclined and do all my own work, just not transmissions.
