5r55es are evolved a4lds, the m50d should go in its place. depending on what motor you have decides what tranny you need. the newer 4.0 sohc require m50dr1 hd trannys and older 4.0 ohv require the 4.0 m50d. 3.0s require the 3.0 m50d, and the bellhousing is not interchangeable so it has to be one for a 3.0 since it has the oddball bolt pattern, same can be said for a 2.3. the 2.8 and 2.9 trannys were the same bellhousing pattern as the 4.0 but the 4.0 was geared steeper, so most ppl prefer to upgrade to the 4.0 m50d on older trks. basically over time the m50d was the common tranny for all rangers, but t5s can be swapped in w/ adapters on some models. i personally havent done a swap but i know the computer may throw faults cuz the newer trannys are computer controlled and w/o the sensory will go apy. the pedal assy w/ slave and master need to be put in and the steering column can be changed, i would (and will be done as im going to put an m50d in place of my a4ld on my 93 model 3.0 4wd trk in the future.) to eliminate the code problems w/ the newer auto style trks (4r44e and 5r55e, i think some later a4lds as well but not sure) is to get the computer for a manual trk. if you have a donor vehicle that you can rob everything from that would be your best bet. there is some discrepency between some yrs but if you can find one w/ the stick and motor that matches yours and is 2 or 4wd (whichever you require so you dont have to swap driveshafts etc) that you can rob from go for it.
