Past couple of times I have had the ranger out I have noitced that it seems like I am having to give the truck more and more gas just to get it to start moving. Then today, trying to take out soft the truck started rolling, then when I tryed to give it more gas to take out it was like the truck was in between gears or just sliping really bad. Gave it more fuel then it finally started going. Its either take out with alot of effort or take out softly and start sliping until moving at a pretty good speed. There is no in between. Whats up with my 5r55e 2000 4.0 ohv 4x4? 140,000 on the clock.

Have tranny Serviced, although it sounds like your too late. probabably need to go with a 4 speed or a 5 speed manual ??

You may need to service the valve body. But first, what does the fluid look like? Is it low?

On one of the Explorer forums there is a nice write up on R&R of the 5R55E valve body. It includes some modifications using an inexpensive shift kit (about $35).

One notorious problem is the valve body bolts become loose. In older transmissions, the gasket would also blow out and you would lose gears.

try a google search for '5R55E valve body rebuild diary' (or something very close to this).

Paul.
