i bought a '99 sport 4x4 with pushrod 4.0 and 5r55e..white..with 160k..for a $1000..it needed a fender and hood from a minor accident..got that done with junkyard parts...everything is clean and works except the trans...it shifts into 5th then back to 4th alot..it also is a little schizo on other gears sometimes[shifting late or hard or early]...nothing major....i checked the TPS [because it was the only reciept included with the truck] and found it had the wrong one..it was turning the opposite way...got that replaced and the 5th/4th thing changed...it would stay in 4th most of the time.....testing it, i drove down the road a bit and got onto the freeway..stepped on it and it dropped into neutral..[revs flying]..i let off the throttle and it shifted...this was the start of this happening more and more...i took it to a mechanic because 1. i didnt have the space with 10 other projects going on and 2.my scanner innova scanner 1403 wont do trans codes...i check out all the forums to try and diagnose the problem and 2 things seem likely...the EPC solenoid and valvebody gasket so after a month over there ..i drop in to see the status of things....and they scanned it and thought the same things so they replaced 4 solenoids and the gasket..flush and filter too....but now its doing the same stuff again....he thinks it might be the pump....i think they messed something up....does anybody have an opinion? any help appreciated!....thanks

5R's don't last much longer than 160K (mine went at 90K, then 160K, then 220K) I have a buddy that has one (railman) and has around 180K I think, but he needed a new TC at some point in its life. Could be pump or TC going (sounds like irratic line pressure), but I'd go ahead and find a replacement or get it rebuilt...You can go back to where it was repaired and raise hell saying its not fixed, but honestly your just putting a bandaid on a broken bone. It will need rebuilding soon...

Mine in my 04 Ranger would slip in OD at 55k. All fluid changes done by the book. I am pretty sure it was that tranny but maybe I am wrong on the model. I worked at the dealer at the time so I got a ton of work done for cheap Canadian beer.

Towing slightly heavy loads in OD can wear out the OD bands quick (one reason I switched to V8 and 4R70W [AODE], stronger, more reliable trans) as well, if you tow any kind of heavy loads where your truck needs to downshift going up a light hill, you need to cancel OD when towing. The 5R was not designed to tow loads in overdrive...

The only thing it ever moved was a 400 pound bike in the bed.

well...im wondering if the valve body could be leaking..i hear the piston o-rings leaking can have this symptom too....

Sounds like the clutch for the lockup in the TC is bad. But what gets me is the trans still should have stayed in 4th and not reved like you say it did. Is the O/D light blinking at all?

no the OD lite never blinked...but it would come on sometimes over 35mph and stay there...it shifts perfect in the first 3 gears so why would low pressure only effect 3-4..4-5 shifts?

The higher the gears you enter the more fluid pressure is needed. If you have a failing pump, it might only put out a certain pressure, but your trans requires more....could be seals inside worn reducing pressure as well....

have you heard anything about the intermediate servo o-ring?...some suggest it could be the culprit
