5r55e no reverse

I have a 99 ranger 4.0 4x4 with the 5r55e trans. I don't have reverse. I know it is a common issue with this trans. I'm going to be tearing it out this weekend. Now my question is has anyone just replaced the reverse band instead of doin a whole rebuild? The fluid isn't burnt and does not have metal shavings in it. Any info would be awesome thanks.

I would drop the pan and check that the valve body gasket isn't blown out around the reverse servo before I pulled the trans. It may be an easier fix then you think.

Thanks that sounds a lot easier. Ill check that first.

easier yet, drop it in manual 1, if it doesn't move the band is broke. I've seen more broken bands than blown out gaskets. Blown gaskets were usually rebuilds being the owner didn't catch it in time.
