5r55e fluid out line

Does anyone know if it the top line or the lower one, i pulled all my old cooler lines out of the truck and cant really tell which is which
 
Well, heat rises, so the lower line is probably the return.
 
That's what I figured but I couldn't find any diagrams.
 
the top is the return. Ford's don't have a check valve in the lines so you are ok and a cooler normally doesn't care which way the fluild is going through it. Slight chance you could dislodge some built up junk in the cooler but that's what the filter is for right?

im only trying to figure this out because i got a cbr trans cooler with a 12" spal fan, and i need to hook up the temp send for the fan on the exit line, so are you sure the top line is return?
 
Reviving this thread, I need to know for sure, I have no way telling with a sealed system and I can't find a schematic. Does anyone know for certain?
 
I know this sounds stupid and messy but take a transmission line off. Have someone start the truck and see which way the fluid flows. As soon as you see which way it flows have them shut it down. It may work too with a starter button on the soleniod and just cranking it motor over. If I knew the answer I would sure tell you but unfortunately I don't, and this was the first thing that came to mind.
 
see thats what i didn't want to do.. lol something really tells me that the top line is fluid out.
 
Trace them back from the cooler. The line coming from the top of the trans cooler is the return line.
 
It's not that easy there are no more stock cooler lines.

That shouldnt work with a 5r. It has an internal thermostatically controlled bypass... It wont flow fluid until its warmed up.
