I'm sure someone will bring up a post that I have overlooked, but so far, I have yet to read about an exact issue such as mine.
My truck currently has 210k miles on it, the transmission was rebuilt at about 90k, due to coolant getting into the system shortly after I bought it. At the time, radiator and hoses were replaced.
The last few winter seasons I have noticed that when it starts to get cold (50-40 degrees and below), you can start the truck cold, put it in drive and make it about a block or so, where I would come to an intersection and stop. At this point the transmission will completely disengage. No forward gears or reverse. I have to sit and wait (and yes, I avoid revving the engine). It will eventually catch, and sometimes it will be good for the rest of the drive to work, other days it may disengage 2 or 3 more times. Sometimes it will be fine at a stop until i give it just enough gas to put me out in the middle of an intersection and leave me stranded.
Once it has been driven a few miles and warmed up, it seems to operate perfectly fine. Some additional notes... Even if I let it sit in the driveway and warm up before driving, it may still disengage at a stop. Upon cold start it does also seem to be making some sort of quiet "whining" noise that is relative to movement, of which, I only currently recall hearing in reverse, and it does go away rather quickly. It does not seem to "slip" at all, and if you do rev it, it does not try to inch its way along... it will just completely disengaged with no warning. There are also no trouble codes, aside from a p0171 lean code, which I assume is unrelated, but listed for the sake of being thorough.
I have read about the issues with the valve body gasket, and after a partial fluid and filter change yielded less than desirable results, I decided to drain it again and pull the valve body. Sure enough, the lower gasket was blown out on the outer edge of the valve body, behind shift solenoid A (or around the 7th bolt hole according to Sonnax diagram). I am hesitant to believe this is the root of all the issues, since my 'unfamiliar with automatics' logic would seem to believe that the issue wouldn't simply go away once the vehicle warms up or when the weather gets warm.
The valve body is currently sitting on my work bench waiting for advise. This is currently my only means of transportation, so any insight would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
