Hey everyone,

I have a 1986 Ford Ranger Stx, 5 speed, 2.9l v6. 191,000 Miles. When I first got the truck it was making a grinding sound in 3rd gear but it was quite. I changed the gear oil (80-90) and alot of miles down the road, in 1st, 2nd, 3rd it is grinding and "clunking" at slow speeds. What caused this? Is there anything I could do to make it last a little longer till I find another transmission? Does anybody have another transmisson Forsale?

Thanks!
Ken

your synchros are shot... i know a place in yuma, az thats real cheap... where are you located?

Sounds more like a failed bearing than a synchro. You have the dreaded FM146. Dump it and find a M5OD-R1.

Shouldn't it be filled with ATF and not gear oil?

No, the FM145 takes gear oil.

It sounds like bearings to me. The only one that'll bolt in without mods is another FM145, the M5OD needs different driveshafts and shift boots/floor plate.
