I have a 2004 Ranger 4x4 extended cab with a 4.0 and 5 speed transmission. The rear axle just broke, and I would like to know if an axle from an automatic would also fit; I heard they are a different length.

Also, what years are interchangeable with the 2004?

AFAIK the rear axle WILL interchange. No difference in axle for auto or manual trans.

Yep, no difference between auto/manual and 4x4/4x2. Years back to 94 to 2009 (did 2010 go to disc brakes)

Having a 4.0 you should have a 28 spline 8.8. To keep it "right" (like when you order parts for the axle or brakes) you should try to stay with another 8.8 as opposed to the 7.5 the smaller engine trucks received. Also pay attention to the gear ratios between what you have and what you get or you will mess up your speedometer and goof up how your truck drives.
