i have a 5 speed transmission out of a 93 ranger 2wd with the 3.0 liter engine and im wondering if it will work in my 94 ranger 4wd with the 4.0 liter engine. I know i'll have to change the tail shaft off the 4wd transmission to the other 2wd transmission i'm just not sure if the 2 transmissions are the same. The bell housings look very similar is why i'm asking. The 2wd transmission says 1L54 on the side.

The bellhousings are NOT the same and will not bolt up.

There are differences in the internal parts as well.

And those differences are beyond what the more experienced here consider "obvious"

there is a gearing difference that is unique to the 4.0 trans that makes most of the major parts inside the transmission different from the 2.3/2.3/2.3DOHC/2.5/2.9/3.0 versions of the transmission.

those differences have to do with subtle internal differences in the case, input gear and 3-4 synchro parts that make crossing the line from the "wide ratio" all NON-4.0 engines version of the trans to the 4.0 version "difficult"

The 3.0 bellousing's only similarity with the 4.0 bellhousing is thet the starter is mounted on the driver's side

The number of bolts is different , 6 on a 3.0 8 on a 4.0(two at the bottom go into the STRUCTURAL oil pan)

the starter on the 3.0 is mounted with 3 bolts, not 2 as on a 4.0.

The bolts are larger on a 3.0, 12mmx1.75 thread as opposed to the 10mmX1.5 thread bolts used on a 4.0

And finally the two "dowel pin" bolts on a 3.0 go into the THREADED bellhousing holes from The FRONT of the engine
The holes in the block aren't threaded!
