My 5 speed in a 94 makes a grinding rattle noise occassionally. as soon as I put in the clutch it stops. Then I can drive and it won't do it for a while but comes back. The clutch is fairly new, a transmission shop pulled the tranny and replaced the throwour bearing. They said the bearings in the trans were a bit worn. It mad it about 4 miles and is still doing it. Any ideas?

Pilot bearing,
Did they change it with the clutch? A lot of shops don't, and say they did...

the clutch was done a while back at a different shop 500 miles away. It had an extra throwout bearing because we bought a clutch kit and a slave cylinder, both of which had a throwout bearing in it. It made no sense as the shop that just looked at it and said the throwout bearing was bad, said it was rusty. It probably had less than a thousand miles on it and I can't figure out how it got rusty. The noise comes for no apparent reason then comes back for no apparent reason. I am not even sure if the noise is in the trans part or the transfer case part. seems like the shift left has a vibration to it when it makes the noise.

When the m5od-r1 makes that rattle the pocket bearing is going bad. What makes that go bad? Check to make sure nobody put 90 weight in it. This transmission requires ATF and a good way to screw it up is gear oil. Bearing and synchro kit on Ebay is about $200 and will take you a day to do the transmission once you have it out maybe longer depending on your mechanical skill.

Edit note: While it's out put a new pilot bearing in. They are only about 3 bucks at a bearing house.

how long will it go through the rattlling before it comes apart

My pocket bearing has been bad the last 3yrs, one of those it was my DD.

Though that noise is constant, unless in 4th, were those to shafts are locked together.

I have had pilot bearings go bad, where the sound was intermittent.

Just my $0.02...

The M5OD-R1 does not rattle when the pocket bearing is going bad or is out. It has a grinding noise and is harder to get into gear. Where do we get these things from?

Are you 100% it is coming from the transmission area? If so check your heat shiel around your cat.

just that it stops as soon as I put the clutch in then I can drive again...sometimes a couple miles sometimes a couple blocks...the first time it happened on the freeway...I will climb under there and look for loose things...trying in my mind to figure what spins and what doesn't with the clutch in as the truck is still rolling but it quits making the sound

Well I can only go by the symptoms executed by my transmission when it was on it's way out. Maybe there were multiple problems... But we'll never know because I have replaced everything.

It may have sounded like a rattle at the top end but, what you was probably hearing was gear chatter from misaligned gears on the main shaft and the counter shaft meshing together more than normal.

The 'scream' from cat heat shield is RPM dependant, doesn't even need to be in gear
Mine does it when started from cold and 'fast idle' is in operation. I've lived with it for 8 yrs, don't trust local dealer so never took it back for 'recall', the fix is just a massive hose clamp around the damn thing

Mine was making a sort of rattle noise recently...checked the fluid and it seemed OK...then I thought I'd put in a bit to top it up...took almost a litre before it actually stopped flowing back out...

I actually put in a small bottle of some miracle sludge that they sell and it has been quiet ever since...also helps to turn off my hearing aides when I drive or turn up the radio...:)

That input shaft rattle is typical of these transmissions. I had a new '90 Ranger in 1990 that rattled even when brand new. It really is not something that will usually cause a problem. My '89 now rattles a bit and it had over 200K on it.
