5 speed question

Will any 5 speed from a Ranger replace a bad 5 speed in a different Ranger? I bought my brother in laws Ford Ranger, sight unseen. He had it on his farm and doesn't use it, I wanted a truck to fix up for my son. He told me the only real problem is a noise in certain gears, 3rd and 4th I think. I found a 5 speed out of a 94 Ranger with a blown engine. Will a 94 Ranger 5 speed fit in an 87 Ranger? Thanks, Ken

Need more info, 4x4 or 2wd pickups? Also depends on the engine. If both pickups are 4 cylinders and both 4x4 or 2wd it should swap over fairly easily. If the 87 is a 2.9L and the 94 is a 4.0L again, it should swap over easily if both are 2wd or 4wd.

the truck with the good tranny is a 94 4x4 with a 2.3 liter, my truck (bad tranny) is an 87 4x4 with a 2.9 liter. If it'll swap in easily I'll go get the 94 tranny and keep it until I can get the 87 into the garage. thanks, ken

The six cylinder and the four cylinder engines use different engine to trans matings. 4WD trans will not work with 2WD trucks.

Nope, not a compatible swap. The bolt pattern for the bellhousing to the engine is different.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad I didn't waste the trip and pay $100 for a transmission I couldn't use.
