5.0 Transmission

Alright, so this may seem really dumb. But I know that the 300i6 shares the bellhousing pattern as the 302 and 351w, and I know that the f150 came with a m50d behind them. So my question is, is the m5od the same length between the f150 and the ranger? and what about the tailshaft? did ford think it was brilliant to change that too? So what I'm asking is would the full side m5od behind a 302 be able to bolt to a bw1354?

A Ranger T-case will not bolt to a SBF M5OD. You are pretty much stuck with fullsize stuff for that.

For what it is worth, the '97+ 4.2 F-150's have the shifter in a better location than the earlier transmissions for a RBV. IIRC the holes in the bellhousing are smaller but are in the right place.

Alright, thanks for the info. If i were to go with a the m5od from that, what about a full size tcase, I have a 91 Explorer so would it be easier to fit a full size tcase?

That is a good point, your frame is wider than a Ranger so you would have more room.

Dunno how they fit in an Ex for sure, but the BW1356 that late model F-150's normally run is a tight fit in a Ranger, as is the NP208 that preceeded it. But they are fitable in a Ranger (with some work), so they would fit in an Ex better (I would think)

I looked into this stuff with mine, ended up with a C5 mutant that my stock transfer bolted to.

you can bolt a ranger case to any f/s 31 spline ford transmission with the 6 hole standard pattern with an adapter, but it adds 2-3 inches and the complexity of the spudshaft to step down to a 25 spline, its why i dont like to recommend it

its easier to fit a f/s case to an explorer. but a bodylift is really something to consider to keep it up in the rails.

Thanks a lot guys for the info, thanks for the link but 400 is a lot just to keep a stock transfercase. If I do go through with the swap I would go 5 speed and use a full size tcase, would I have to notch the frame at all? I have a 3 inch body lift just haven't put it in yet

i did not have to notch the frame on the sploder when cocking it to the passenger side like the rangers, but i have cut them a bit with the 1356 due to desires of owner to center the engine......dont bug me a bit to offset and roll it a little but some people dont like that...yet that particular setup went with a jeep w/t 30...the later 98 up manual ford fs case fits better then the early fat wide bastards but has some overhead issues depending on actual engine placement and belly height desires......rangers get cut no matter what if i am installing with the fullsize ford cases..

if you adapt a jeep case they fit nice though. but adapting like mentioned adds expense and complexity...

I was wondering the same the other day but I was interested in posibly doing a zf5 swap. Mine is a '00 ranger w/ a 3" bl and on 33"bfg km2, it has went through 2 of the 4.0's and I am hesitant to even consider another. I have howerver been on the lookout for a 5.0 equiped exploder for the swap. I would go back to a 4.0 if the price was right though.

So bobbywalter obviously is great at what he does, and knows the right way to do it haha all said and done whats the best tcase to bolt to a 5 speed on the 302 and the best tranny to use, id rather get the info from someone who knows instead of going and searching and having people say one tranny and other say a different one lol.

85 has it about where it needs to be.....


get a later 4.2 unit with a manual t case and open the holes up on the bell if necessary. most of the ones i see in the yard up to 99 have manual t cases in them.

i have heard of input bearing issues and certain clutch issues...all easily mitigated with some attention to what parts one is working with.

Well from what I have read and looked into the pre '98 4.0's were a good motor, after that year they were prone to head problems like what I have had with both that pretty much made them junk. I can get a motor for the price of the heads. Go figure. I am like you though, I would prefer a throaty v-8 in it and am willing to bet that a 5.0 in a ranger can be just as good on gas.
