Anyone familiar with swapping a 5.0 in a ranger around the Lincoln or Omaha area? I have a stalled project and am in way over my head. Here is the back story.

2014 I hired a shade tree mechanic to help me swap engines. I provided a running 1998 ford explorer and my 1999 Ranger that my father rebuilt for me in 2010. He then took both vehicles to his house about two blocks away, I paid half down and told him I was in no rush as we had two other cars at the time. (I know my mistake, should have made a timeline) I would check in weekly and after three weeks he seemed to be making decent progress. At this point he moved into a shop across town and moved both trucks with him. After another month communication began to break down but I let him keep going on them. I felt I didn't have many options and was starting to get un-easy. Long story short, after two more months I was contacted by the local police to remove my ranger from the road before it was towed. I show up to my ranger with an empty engine bay, V8 and trans in the bed and haven't seen the v6 or the explorer since (I still have the title for the original explorer).

A friend decided a few months later he could tackle the project and after taking the truck to his house and paying him the full amount he was able to mount the engine and take care of the motor mounts but stalled out after that portion.

I brought it back to my house after another year and a half. I have recently purchased another donor explorer but this wiring is still way beyond my capabilities. It seems like I am dealing with part explorer wiring and part ranger wiring. I am mechanically inclined and have tackled many projects on other vehicles but this one seems cursed at this point.

If anyone is within a reasonable distance of Tecumseh Nebraska, I would pay for travel, food, beer, hell whatever you need at this point to get it running. Thats all I want is for it to run. I can complete the rest. Please Help!

Sounds like quite the ordeal, its unfortunate you just cant trust most people to do as they promise.

I am an hour east of Omaha. Meat and taters stuff is similar I think but I don't have all the digical stuff with my carbed 85.

EVTM's for both host and donor go a long ways though (check ebay)

@fastpakr any advice for the electronic side of it?

I will start looking for those and order them. Thank you!

Was your ranger a v6 or a 4 cylinder before the swap. The 98 explorer should have had pats and the same fuel system as the ranger. If the ranger was flex fuel just change the pump out. Also if the explorer is a return system you'll just have to ad a return line back to the tank. I have a write up on dropping a 2000 5.0 in my 98. Yours should be pretty similar. I will answer any questions I can and will try to point you in the direction of someone who can if I can't.

@bloodhound3007 : Don't underestimate your ability -- or the ability of the gentlemen on this forum to be able to help from a distance. Make a list of the things that need to be accomplished and post it. These guys can put it in order for you and then you can put a timeline to it.
They walked me through some stuff on mine - not a swap, but something I thought I couldn't do - and it turned out just fine. Plus I gained a tom of confidence and a bunch of new tools :)

Uncle Gump <------ 51% Gentleman

I'm barely hanging on... lets just not push any buttons please.

It was a joke guy's. I'm sorry I forgot to mention pickles, cantaloupe or 42.

You make a good argument, and Dirtman should have your back on this one.

It was probably over the head of the first guy you took it to too, or he would have had it done.

@RonD and @Jim Oaks can't answer everything... Oh wait, maybe they can...

I know @Uncle Gump, @Grumpaw and a few others probably qualify as gentlemen too, but I can't think of many more. Maybe @sgtsandman on a good day. LOL

Who’s accusing me of being a gentleman?!

I’m an Enlisted man and a mechanic. I work for a living dang it!
