Cable will work. My stock 99 shift cable (5R55E) is connected to and actuating the 4R70W in my swap.
You will need to source the cable bracket for mounting to the transmission. It'll need to be from another 4R70W. Probably any 4R70W will work, but an Explorer will guarantee best chance of fitting.
